The Cheapest Way to Fly Business Class to Japan

Business class to Tokyo on miles costs from 55,000 points one way. Which programs book ANA and Japan Airlines, what each really costs, and how to find the seats.

Japan is one of the best places to fly business class on miles. The seats are among the best in the sky, several programs still price them from fixed charts, and the cash fares they replace often run to several thousand dollars one way.

The catch is availability. ANA and Japan Airlines release only a few business class award seats on each flight, so knowing which program books which airline matters as much as knowing the price.

This guide goes deeper on the Japan section of our guide to the cheapest way to fly business class. The prices below are one way and were checked in October 2026.

Which programs book business class to Japan

Program Business class one way Airline
American AAdvantage 60,000 miles Japan Airlines, from anywhere in the contiguous US
Air Canada Aeroplan 55,000 or 85,000 points ANA and other Star Alliance partners, priced by distance
ANA Mileage Club 50,000 to 82,500 miles ANA’s own flights, priced by season
Cathay Asia Miles 119,000 miles Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong

AAdvantage on Japan Airlines is the strongest fixed price on the route when seats are open. Aeroplan is the most flexible way to book ANA. ANA’s own program has been selling one-way awards since June 2025, at half its round-trip price.

How rare the seats are

These are chart prices, and the charts only matter when a seat is released to partners. In mid-October 2026 we searched seven US gateways (New York, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle) to Tokyo: Japan Airlines released no business class award seat to partner programs from mid-October to mid-December, or from February to March 2027. ANA showed two seats in early March, through United at 110,000 miles.

What did show up on most days was American’s own New York to Haneda flight, booked with AAdvantage at its dynamic price, far above the 60,000-mile chart rate. Our New York to Tokyo page shows every one of those seats by day with the total in dollars. If you want JAL or ANA at the chart price, plan to wait for a seat to open, or ask us to watch for one.

Where you fly from changes the price

Aeroplan prices partner awards by the total distance flown, including any connection. That makes your departure city part of the price:

  • Seattle to Tokyo is under 5,000 miles, which puts it in the 55,000-point band.
  • San Francisco or Los Angeles to Tokyo lands in the 85,000-point band, between 5,001 and 7,500 miles.
  • New York to Tokyo nonstop is about 6,700 miles, so it is also 85,000 points. A connection through another US city can push a trip past 7,500 miles and into a higher band.

AAdvantage charges the same 60,000 miles to Japan from anywhere in the contiguous US, so it is often the better deal from the East Coast and the Aeroplan bands matter most from the West Coast.

Asia Miles prices on the whole trip’s distance too. Any routing from the US through Hong Kong to Japan passes 7,500 miles, which is why it costs 119,000 miles. Cathay Pacific also passes fuel surcharges on to the award.

ANA or Japan Airlines

Both are excellent, and the right one is usually whichever has a seat on your dates.

  • Japan Airlines is in oneworld, so AAdvantage books it at 60,000 miles with only a few dollars in taxes on most US routes.
  • ANA is in Star Alliance, so Aeroplan books it without carrier surcharges, adding only a small partner booking fee. Booked through ANA’s own program, ANA adds its fuel surcharge, so check the total at the payment step.

What each option really costs

The award price is only half of it. Here is what the miles cost at our rates in October 2026, before taxes and fees:

Program Award Miles cost Good to know
American AAdvantage 60,000 miles $1,020 We deliver AAdvantage miles as a ready account, so you buy the whole award, not a top-up
Air Canada Aeroplan 85,000 points $1,700 for 100,000 points Our minimum Aeroplan order is 100,000 points, which leaves 15,000 for another trip
Cathay Asia Miles 119,000 miles $2,023 Plus Cathay’s fuel surcharges
ANA Mileage Club 50,000 to 82,500 miles On quote We don’t sell ANA miles. We book the ANA seat for you instead

Compare the total with the cash fare for your dates. When the cash fare is several thousand dollars, the award usually wins by a wide margin.

How to find the seats

  1. Search early. Partner award seats to Japan tend to appear when the schedule opens and disappear quickly, especially in spring and autumn.
  2. Stay flexible by a few days. One open seat a few days either side is often the difference between finding an award and not.
  3. Check both airlines. Search Japan Airlines on American’s site and ANA on Aeroplan’s before deciding which miles to buy.
  4. Buy only after you see the seat. Find it, then buy the miles and book straight away.

When paying cash to Japan is cheaper

Cash can win when a business class sale brings the fare close to the cost of the miles, when no award seat exists on your dates, or when you would have to buy far more miles than the award needs. Run the numbers every time.

Buy only the miles your Japan trip needs

Find the seat first, then work out what you are short. Each program page shows our current rate, minimum order and delivery time, and you get a written quote before paying anything.

The bottom line: For business class to Japan, check Japan Airlines through AAdvantage at 60,000 miles and ANA through Aeroplan at 55,000 or 85,000 points, but expect to wait for seats: partner space is rare. Find the seat first, then buy the miles and book.
