Cheapest Way to Fly Business Class to Australia and New Zealand
Business class to Sydney or Auckland on miles costs from 80,000 miles one way. Which programs book Qantas and Air New Zealand, what each costs, and how to find seats.

Australia and New Zealand are among the hardest business class awards to book. The flights are some of the longest in the world, cash fares are high all year, and the airlines release very few premium seats to award travellers.
That makes the price on the chart matter less than usual. The program that can actually find you a seat is the one worth buying.
This guide goes deeper on the Australia and New Zealand section of our guide to the cheapest way to fly business class. The prices below are one way and were checked in October 2026.
Which programs book business class to Australia and New Zealand
| Program | Business class one way | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| American AAdvantage | 80,000 miles | Qantas and American flights to Australia and New Zealand |
| Air Canada Aeroplan | 85,000 points from the West Coast | Air New Zealand and United to Auckland. Longer trips price from 102,500 points |
| Qantas Frequent Flyer | 130,100 points Los Angeles to Sydney | 151,800 points from Dallas. Classic Reward seats on US routes are scarce |
| United MileagePlus | Dynamic | United’s own nonstops to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland |
AAdvantage has the lowest fixed price on Qantas when partner seats are open. Aeroplan is the strongest way into New Zealand when Air New Zealand releases seats to partners. Qantas’s own program costs more but sees more of Qantas’s own seats.
In mid-October 2026 the 80,000-mile AAdvantage price was bookable on Qantas from Los Angeles to Brisbane, and Qantas’s own program had the same flight at 130,100 points. American’s own flights to Sydney and Auckland showed seats too, but at its dynamic price from about 120,000 miles. Air New Zealand had no seats open to Aeroplan in the two months we checked, so expect to wait for one.
Australia or New Zealand changes the best program
- Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are Qantas and United country. Start with AAdvantage for Qantas and check United’s own prices for United’s flights.
- Auckland is Air New Zealand’s hub, and Air New Zealand is in Star Alliance, so Aeroplan is usually the first place to look.
- Onward flights within Australia or across the Tasman add distance, which can move an Aeroplan award into a higher band.
Where you fly from changes the price
Aeroplan prices partner awards by total distance, so a West Coast departure keeps an Auckland trip in the 85,000-point band. A connection from the East Coast or a continuation to Australia usually pushes it to 102,500 points or more.
AAdvantage charges the same 80,000 miles from anywhere in the contiguous US, which makes it stronger the further east you start, as long as the connecting flights have seats too.
What each option really costs
The award price is only half of it. Here is what the miles cost at our rates in October 2026, before taxes and fees:
| Program | Award | Miles cost | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| American AAdvantage | 80,000 miles | $1,360 | We deliver AAdvantage miles as a ready account, so you buy the whole award, not a top-up |
| Air Canada Aeroplan | 85,000 points | $1,700 for 100,000 points | Our minimum Aeroplan order is 100,000 points |
| United MileagePlus | Varies | 1.9¢ a mile | Our minimum United order is 100,000 miles, delivered within 7 business days |
| Qantas Frequent Flyer | 130,100 points | On quote | Our Qantas rate is indicative until confirmed, so we quote it with your order |
Qantas awards booked with Qantas points also carry carrier charges, so compare the full total, not just the points.
How to find the seats
- Search the moment the schedule opens. Qantas and Air New Zealand release partner seats early and rarely add more later.
- Search one person at a time. A single business class seat is far more common than two together.
- Try both directions of the trip separately. Booking two one-way awards in different programs is often the only way to get there and back in business.
- Buy only after you see the seat. Find it, then buy the miles and book straight away.
When paying cash to Australia is cheaper
Cash can win when a business class sale brings the fare near the cost of the miles, when no award seat exists for your dates, or when only a premium economy award is left and the business cabin is on sale. Run the numbers every time.
Buy only the miles your trip down under needs
Find the seat first, then work out what you are short. Each program page shows our current rate, minimum order and delivery time, and you get a written quote before paying anything.

The bottom line: For business class to Australia, look first at Qantas through AAdvantage at 80,000 miles. For New Zealand, start with Air New Zealand through Aeroplan at 85,000 points. Seats are scarce, so find one first, then buy the miles and book.
