Buying Avios — your questions
Is Avios one currency or several?
One. British Airways, Iberia, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Finnair and Aer Lingus all hold the same Avios, and balances move between them 1:1 and instantly. What changes between programs is what an award costs and what fees it carries, not the currency itself.
Which should I buy, BA or Qatar Avios?
Right now Qatar Airways holds both the cheapest confirmed rate (1.50¢) and the lowest minimum (10,000 Avios), so it is the default answer at any amount. They are the same Avios once delivered: buy through Qatar Airways and move them 1:1 if you want to book from British Airways instead.
Can I move Avios to Iberia or Finnair?
Yes, 1:1. We deliver into the Qatar Airways, British Airways, Iberia account you already hold, and you move them onward yourself from there. Finnair Plus, Aer Lingus AerClub, Vueling Club and Loganair Loyalty are transferable too, but we don't deliver directly into them.
Is Avios the same as QMiles?
Yes. Qatar Airways retired QMiles in 2022 and converted every balance to Avios, the same currency British Airways, Iberia and Finnair use. Anything you read about QMiles applies to Avios now.
Do Avios expire?
Only after 36 months of total inactivity, and any single earn, spend, purchase or share resets the whole balance. Lapsed Avios can even be reinstated within about three months. In practice, an account that books anything stays alive indefinitely.
