How much are Qantas miles worth?

A mile is worth what its redemption saves you: divide the cash fare by the miles the award needs. Above ~1.9¢ per mile — what Frequent Flyer miles cost to buy here — the miles beat the fare. Price your amount live, and the verdict on your real fare lives on the Frequent Flyer page.

The tilde matters: this program's rate is indicative until your quote confirms it. The quote is always the binding number, never this page.

How many Frequent Flyer miles do you actually need?

Put in what the award costs and what your account already holds. This prices the difference, whether that's a small top-up or the whole award from an empty balance, and it says so when the amount lands under Frequent Flyer's smallest order.

How the math works

Cost = miles × rate

Frequent Flyer at ~1.9¢ per mile means every 1,000 miles costs ~$19. A 70,000-mile award is 70 × ~$19 = ~$1,330. No fees are added on top of the quoted rate.

When buying makes sense

Divide the cash fare by the miles the award needs: that's what the seat values a mile at. If it's comfortably above ~1.9¢, buying wins; if it's below, pay cash. The Frequent Flyer page's comparison tool runs that verdict on your real numbers.

Why the quote is the real number

Rates move with sourcing. The figure here prices your estimate; the quote confirms your exact rate and delivery window before anything is paid, and that confirmed number is the one that binds.

A worked example. Say the award needs 70,000 miles and the cash fare you found is $4,200. That fare values each mile at 6.0¢ ($4,200 ÷ 70,000), and buying them at ~1.9¢ costs ~$1,330. Miles win by ~$2,870. When the division lands below ~1.9¢, cash wins.

Where the break-even sits

Every award has one deciding number: what its miles cost to buy. Fare above it, buying wins. Fare below it, pay cash.

The awardMiles it needsBreak-even fare
Short-haul economy, round trip (illustrative)≈30,000~$570
Long-haul economy, one-way (illustrative)≈45,000~$855
Long-haul business, one-way (illustrative)≈85,000~$1,615
Long-haul business, round trip (illustrative)≈160,000~$3,040

Generic award sizes are illustrative; Qantas prices its own chart, and your route sets the real number. Taxes and carrier surcharges are billed by the airline at booking and sit outside this math. The tilde means your quote confirms the exact rate.

When Frequent Flyer miles are worth buying

Premium cabin, long-haul?

Business and first class fares clear the break-even by the widest margins. This is where buying miles most often wins.

Fare above the break-even?

Divide the fare by the miles the award needs. Above ~1.9¢ per mile, buying wins, and the further above, the bigger the saving.

Short hop in economy?

Cheap cash fares rarely clear the break-even. Pay cash, and save the miles math for the long-haul trips.

The Frequent Flyer math, answered

Is there a single fixed value for a Frequent Flyer mile?
There is no fixed value. A mile is worth what its redemption saves you: divide the cash fare by the miles the award needs. Above ~1.9¢ per mile the miles are worth more than they cost to buy, and long-haul premium-cabin awards usually clear that bar by the widest margin.
Should I buy Qantas miles or pay cash?
Compare the cash fare with the break-even: the price of the miles the award needs. At ~1.9¢ per mile, a 70,000-mile award breaks even at ~$1,330. If the fare is higher, buying wins; if it is lower, pay cash. The comparison tool on the Frequent Flyer page runs that verdict on your real numbers.
Does this calculator include award taxes and fees?
No. Airlines bill taxes and any carrier surcharges separately when you book the award, and those vary by route. The calculator and your quote price the miles only.
Can it tell me how many miles a flight will earn?
No. Earning depends on Qantas's own rules and lives in the airline's tools. This page prices topping up an account that is short of an award.
Is there a minimum or maximum order?
Orders run from 50,000 to 500,000 miles per transfer. If you need something outside that range, say so on the quote request and we'll confirm whether we can do it.
