The 50% Rule — What You Must Know
This is the most important rule in EVA Air Infinity MileageLands.
When you buy EVA Air miles, you can only use them for HALF of your ticket. You need to earn the other half by flying.
"Purchased miles cannot be more than half (50%) of your award ticket."
— EVA Air Official Policy
📝 Simple Example
Let's say you want a free business class ticket. It costs 75,000 miles.
- You need at least 37,500 miles from flying (that's half)
- You can buy up to 37,500 miles to finish the rest
- You can't buy all 75,000 miles. You must earn half first.
50% Rule Chart
| Ticket Cost | Miles You Must Earn | Miles You Can Buy |
|---|---|---|
| 75,000 | 37,500 | 37,500 |
| 80,000 | 40,000 | 40,000 |
| 50,000 | 25,000 | 25,000 |
| 25,000 | 12,500 | 12,500 |

💡 Why This Rule is Actually Good
The 50% rule means EVA Air miles are for "topping up." If you fly EVA or Star Alliance sometimes, you probably have miles already. Buying miles helps you finish what you need for a great trip.
Tip: Even if you only fly a few times a year, you likely have enough earned miles to buy the rest for a business class seat.

Do EVA Air Miles Expire?
Yes. EVA Air Infinity MileageLands miles expire after 36 months (3 years).
This is a strict rule for most members:
- ❌ Each group of miles expires exactly 3 years after you earned them
- ❌ Earning new miles does NOT save your old miles
- ❌ Using miles does NOT save your other miles
- ❌ You cannot bring back expired miles
Exception:
In some countries, laws don't allow time-only expiration. If you live in one of these places, you can extend your miles for another 36 months. But you must BOTH use some miles AND fly an EVA or UNI Air international flight within 12 months of when your miles would expire.
How to Keep Your Miles Safe
- ✓ Check your account often to see when miles expire
- ✓ Plan trips before your miles run out
- ✓ Top up and book rather than losing miles
- ✓ Get Diamond status for longer mile life
Example: When Miles Expire
| Miles Earned | When You Got Them | When They Expire |
|---|---|---|
| 10,000 | January 2023 | January 2026 |
| 25,000 | June 2024 | June 2027 |
| 15,000 (bought) | December 2025 | December 2028 |
